COMMUNITY POLYTECHNIC:
Rurla Development has become a matter of uugent concern to most developing countries, especially India for consideration of social justice, national integration, economic necessasity and employment opportunity. Nearly 80% of our population live in rural areas and constitute the weaker section of society without their development, the present flow of population from rural to urban areas has to be arrested. A stage has therefore beeb reached where we have to give a serious consideration to the utilisation of the resources and manpower available in areas.
The Government of India has rightly selected some highly resourceful polytechnic to work for rural development and upgrading these institutes as Community Polytechnics. Our polytechnic is one of the first three polytechnics that had been designated as Community Polytechnics. Separate cell had been formed among the staff members of the polytechnic to implement the objectives of this scheme. At present 8 training centres are functioning at the following villages: Athur, Ozhalur, Thirumakoodal Sogandi, Vettangulam, Nemili, Vedachalam Nagar(Kanchipuram) and at our polytechnic.
Training is given in trades like welding, winding, tailoring, radio and T.V assembling and servicing, turning, wiring etc. trades. Proposals are under consideration to have service maintenance center for automobiles, thrashers, tillers, trsilors and other agricultural implements, diesel engines and motor pumpsets. Non-formal courses will be conducted to train people in motor mechanic, winding etc..
